Baby in the Mirror — Edinburgh Fringe Review
Some things are complicated; too complicated to rationalise, to fit on excel spreadsheets, to fit into a box.
The stage is covered in boxes! We start with the domestic chaos of Lena (Stella Marie Sophie) and Joey (Sammy J Glover) moving in. They both individually have conversations over the phone that overlap but we learn that these two characters are trying for a baby. Having a baby comes with its challenges for anyone regardless of gender or sexual orientation. But for queer couples trying alternative methods it's particularly a process. We feel the tension between these two begin to rise when Lena repacks everything into boxes to paint the walls green. Stella Marie Sophie is brilliant in their feisty delivery and Sammy J Glover compliments this perfectly walking on eggshells around them.
Without giving too much away Ollie (Derek Mitchell), the "Spuncle" for Lena and Joey, finds themselves in the middle of a heated blow out between the two at Lena's "Baby Hen". Derek Mitchell is wonderful and I trullied squirmed watching them trying to defuse the situation.
The play ends on a cliffhanger. I left feeling sorry for these characters but ultimately thinking that some things can't be talked out, you just need to let it be and that if you truly care for the other person you'll stay. Which I like to think will happen for Lena and Joey.
